The Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins is an artist-theologican, writer, activist, public speaker, director, and performer.
Durrell has written plays, vignettes and one act plays that have been performed in Texas, Maryland, New Jersey, New York City, Delaware, and Calgary, Alberta (Canada). He is the author of A Treatment A Day…(Cafe Press, 2005; Lulu Press, 2009), Progressive, Positive, & Practical Encouragement for Spiritual Leaders (Lulu Press, 2009), Fairy Dust: Using Affirmations to Unlock the Magic of Life (Lulu Press, 2009), Optimism & Gratitude: Prayers for Every Day of the Year (Lulu Press, 2010), Progressive, Positive, & Practical: New Thought Reflections (Lulu Press, 2010), and Wrestling With God Without Getting Pinned: Old Stories, New Thoughts, & Progressive Spirituality (Outskirts Press, 2010) and he writes a Weekly Devotional Internet column for email subscribers. He is the editor of Spirit & Truth (daily devotionals, Light University Press) and Sharing the Light (quarterly journal, Light University Press). He has been an Interim Minister, Assistant Minister, Chaplain, and Senior Minister serving in TX, MD, NJ, and FL.
Durrell has been active in full-time ministry since 1993 (approved for ordaination in the summer of 1997 and commissioned by Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson, Rev. Ken Martin, and Rev. Elijah Nealy and ordained in the Fall by Rev. Shelly Hamilton) and is a certified Reiki Master (since 2001). On 9/3/06, he was incardinated into the independent Catholic priesthood and installed as the Canon Precentor of Sunshine Cathedral in Ft. Lauderdale by the Right Reverend Grant Lynn Ford (and blessed by Father John McNeill). In the summer of 2007 Durrell was elected the new Senior Pastor of Sunshine Cathedral and assumed the duties of Senior Pastor in Novemeber 2007 (installed by Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson, assisted by Rev. Elder Don Eastman). He is on the prayer team for the International New Thought Alliance and serves as the INTA Southeast Florida District President. He is currently studying to become a minister of Divine Science.
After completing a B.A. Henderson State University, Durrell completed ministerial training from The Samaritan Institute for Religious Studies. Following ordination, he earned an M.A. from Goddard College, an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in NYC, and a D.Min from the Episcopal Divinity School.
His academic awards for acting, oral interpretation, preaching, and preparation for parish ministry include the Excellent Acting Award (TJCSTA, 1986), Excellent Duo Dramatic Interpretation Award (ASCA, 1990), Excellent Dramatic Interpretation Award (ASCA, 1990), Hudnut Award (UTS, 2006), the Maxwell Fellowship (Auburn Seminary, 2006), and the Dietrich Memorial Prize (EDS, 2009).
